A leak is never good news, and unfortunately, a leak can go unnoticed for a very long time since it is often hidden behind walls or in the ceiling. You will, however, see signs of a leak. If you know what to look for you can stop a leak from causing too much damage.

A pipe leak can even happen in a pretty obvious place such as under your sink, but unless you check there every so often, you won’t even notice it if the leak is a slow one. That is because there is often clutter under the sink which can hide a pool of water unless you are specifically looking for it. The same is true for under your bathroom sinks. So just check once in a while to make sure that you don’t have a slow leak there.

It is best to avoid a leak altogether, and there are a few things that you can do to ensure that your pipes are in good working order. You should wrap exterior piping in heat tape to help prevent them from freezing and bursting. You could also keep a ta running to ensure that there is water running continuously through the pipes which will prevent freezing as well. You normally do not have to do this unless it is unusually cold outside.

If you see pools of water in your basement or anywhere else in your house, you should investigate it immediately and try to find the source. A leak will often start at a joint, so that is a good place to start. If you have a radiator, you should make sure that the pitch of the radiator is always pitched towards the source of the steam to allow any condensation to drain back into the boiler.

Water heaters also tend to leak. It may not always be the water heater itself and could be another issue such as the condensation pump. If you have a significant amount of water that is pooling around the water heater you should contact a plumber to fix the issue.

Many times, a washer or O-ring has worn out and simply needs to be replaced which is a lot cheaper than replacing your entire fixture or calling the plumber. Try that first, and if that doesn’t work, you can always call the plumber. Unfortunately, your faucet will not last forever, and it will eventually need to be replaced. Faucets are used frequently, and they are meant to take a lot of wear and tear, but they do tend to wear out. It can become old and corroded and if replacing the washers and other replaceable parts in it don’t fix it you’ll need to get a new one. It’s a good time to update the look of your kitchen or bathroom. You want to make sure that you don’t have any leaks in your home as it will cause your power bill to go up and can cause extensive damage.
